There are references to this technique in Barth's THE TIDEWATER TALES: A
NOVEL, wherein writer Peter Sagamore muses over writing stories that are
"not about" such things as the CIA and covert government operations (all
the while drawing attention to these, by their very absence).  He also
refers to a jewish writer (name escapes me at the moment -- not enough
coffee yet) who wrote stories that were glaringly "not about" the death
camps in WWII.  I'll see if I can root out my copy of this book & get a few
relevant quotes....
