Have also been reading the Vineland Papers. Along with the Group Theory what
also struck me as an interesting take on VL was David Porush's essay entitled
' "Purring into Transcendence": Pynchon's Puncutron Machine'. After reading
this I went back and tried to find all the mentions of ghosts, spirits and
other beings from another realm. If somebody has already done some sort of
index of this I would be glad to see it.
The spirits and ghosts appear to haunt everyone. Zoyd has dreams of carrier
pigeons bearing messages. Frenesi "believing that the rays coming out of the
TV screen would act as a broom to sweep the room clear of all spirits".
DL and Takeshi's Karmic adjustments for the Thanatoids who are "like death,
only different".
Prairie when she views the 24fps of her mom is seeing the lights and shadows
of the ghostly past.
Weed Atman shows up again as a thanatoid.
The Vietnam War is mentioned in respect to this as supplying an ever
increasing supply of thanatoids.
It is soon after DL and Takeshi meet Ortho Bob Dulang that they have the
vision from the window "all angles ordinarily hidden, in fact, were somehow
clearly visible..naive, direct, no shadows, no hiding places..."
Brock Vond too, is haunted by spirits. Particularly from his repressed
feminine side. In his dreams the "Madwoman of the Attic" comes to visit him.
I don't see this as some sort of "ghost of the revolution" but more as the
transcendent world impinging on the "real world".
Don't forget also the strange UFO's which hijack selected passengers from
Kahuna airplanes, "they looked too familiar...up from Earth, for sure, not in
from...out there or nothin' "
As well we have the Woge, spirits who lived in the woods before the people
came and who have been chased out.
On my first reading I missed a lot of this and wonder what comments anyone
else has.
Cheers
David H
