I attended a hyper-fundamentalist college in the Midwest. (My how I've
groan). Somehow the production of THE CAGE by the San Quentin (?....right
prison?) Drama Workshop made it past the school censors and was performed to
an unwitting and unwilling audience in the hall used for the morning chapel
services. When the play opened with a spotlight on a center stage toilet and
loud voices screaming for the guards to turn on the motherfucking lights I
knew I was in for a rare treat. It lasted for about 15 glorious minutes
before the dean of the college was dragged out of bed and brought in to
bring the performance to a halt. Then, for those of who remained, those
convicts came onstage one at a time and SCREAMED their truth to us and about
us. Still ranks as one of my favorite memories. Many of us gathered in a
small basement room with the actors and talked into the wee hours. For a few
weeks after that, I got up every morning at 5:30 and plastered the campus
with anonymous posters referring to the cessation of the play. Every morning
on their way to chapel, the sanctified got to read my anonymous scrawlings.
Not the most radical act a detoxing fundy can commit, but it's always left a
warm spot in my heart for Wicks. Not to mention his insanity.....
