Reading Vineland for the second time, after something of a Tom Waits
Christmas. Only that nowadays it seems oh so hip to have a TW Xmas...
while some years ago there were supposedly (for me still predivorcal,
nuclear family Christmases at that time) only a few bars in Oulu open
all through Christmastime, now the scene gets jammed every goddamn
nite. As if George Bailey never really existed. Not the best of ages
for a nighthawk candidate seeking the edge of a Hopper loner. And as
if this weren't enough, you find yourself accepting ad-hoc invitations
to people's Christmas dinners, in spite of all intoxicated-minded
promises not to sell out. But, but: we will always have Foodstock,
that untoppable dippie festival. Always. "Make stove, not war" still
ringing out proud in my ears, as it always did. Used to be always
prepared for lunch with a lady I'd never seen before in my life. With
just about everybody in the vicinity every bit as ready for blowout
jobs and/or eating sussi. And how could one forget that Stew classic,
"A Quick Meal While He's Away", or almost anything by Crispy, Grills,
Hash & Yum ... Hungry Joe McDonald & the Fish ... Grainful Bread. And
still, for all that, we weren't omnivorous, oh no; as one Countersauce
dude put it: "There's shit you won't be eating any more". So true, so
true. Yet if someone only could specify what and where that shit is.

Forever Danecheese,
Love,
Heikki
