Thanks, Sebastian and Paul. Your contibutions have added immeasurably 
to my conviction that Pynchon's works have a good deal less to do 
with paranoia and its cousins than it does with the issues of systems 
and their pathologies. What some find a maddening unwillingness to 
pick up the standards of various oppresssed factions, is in fact a 
dispassionate discipline which keeps our man from straying into "feel 
good" tropes just to please the heart burn of a college sophomore. 

I've got to re-read Mr. Dangerfield on Spencer again......and 
again....
