I remember reading a book about folk tales, title escapes me, something like 
Beauty & the beast--sort ofa feminist view of how e.g. the brothers grimm 
basically updated the oral tales bandied about by local women, to make such 
stories less harsh.  If anything, Pynchon has, if the above is true, brought 
the Hansel & Gretel piece a wee bit closer to the original in its perturbing 
factor.  Of course, Angela Carter did this quite successfully.  I would 
point out that her story about Lizzie Borden is in my top ten favorite short 
stories.
