Another great novel about missionaries is William Vollman's Fathers and
Crows about the French Jesuits in Canada. They rejoice when an Iroquois
dies immediately after being baptized because they know that they will be
unable to commit aposty and their soul is secure.
Though they may reperesent another flavor of imperialism, native peoples
have been given far better treatment at the hands of missionaries than those
of traders or other purely economic and political agencies. As long as
they're recognized as having souls, of course...
