  In the original it says "wie spurlos zerträte ein Engel ihnen den Trostmarkt, 
  den die Kirche begrenzt". In m.o.p.a.t.: "how spoorless would an angel trample 
  their market of consolation, which is limited by the church". Since "church"  
  seeems to be modelled by RMR as an restricting major organization, I also   
  would imagine the "market of consolation" as a black one. So Pynchon's change 
  in translation seems indeed pretty odd. Anyone for clarification? - KFL
