Well, I've never read the Tractatus, but as far as I can tell, he
didn't change direction _entirely_. A lot of the same focus is present
in the Investigations - it's just that he thought a lot of the old
work was crap. I suppose that could be understood as "founding two
opposing schools," since (a) the Investigations are tough, and some
people probably avoid understanding them because of it, and (b)
the Tractatus was the only thing published during his lifetime -
meaning that more people were exposed to it, for a long time.
Plan to read some Anglo-American philosophers this spring, so maybe
then I'll have a better idea of how drastic W's switch was.
