rj continues to misread the Christian story in a lame effort to make
Pynchon's villain a hero. God sacrifices Himself on the cross -- a far cry
from Blicero sacrificing his catamite. "Being nailed to a stake and liking
it?" Who would that be? In a moment of human weakness prior to his trial,
Jesus asks if the cup might pass him by, then as a human suffers on the
cross -- a far cry from the tainted delight of Blicero's S & M games.
"Vicarious salvation for the faithful?" No, the Passion is metaphor for the
self-sacrifice that followers of Jesus make when at the time the Gospels
are written they, too, are hunted down and broken by Roman authority, or in
less dramatic circumstances in the centuries since, as they help their
fellows in day to day life.
