There can't be a decapitation without someone to wield the axe.

Seems to me like I remember reading something by Borges in which he
postulated
the existence of a heretical Christian sect that insisted on the
sainthood of
Pilate, without whom there could have been no Passion -- am I mixing up
a
variety of different sources or can anyone back me up here?
