Yes, it is.  To try to force myth into a literal reading is exactly NOT the 
point.  They, art & myth, are evocative, as rj says, "representations."  To 
each his own, but we have ages before us who've gone to Elusius,  taken the 
potion, and seen visions.  Listen to them.  This search is ageless.
