Yes, I see, and agree. And yes the question mark is needed. I should have
said that the salvational, transcendendal aspect is of the GREATEST
importance. Christianity is a Hope for somehow overcoming the Evil (sin if
you will)  of our Materiality. The hope was of course dashed by the
Enlightenment and the so called Broken Estate James Wood talks about in
his book of that name. Wood is referring to the turning of Christian
Belief into a pretty story of an examplary man, a story he equates with
fiction. Seems to be the foundation for his literary theory. Interesting
book even if one doesn't often quite agree with his judgements.
