There are a lot of characters in *TR*, and a lot of talking. I guess
what you're saying is that in *TR* Gaddis was really "listening to the
voices around him" &c ...

By contrast, the conversations between Dzaqyp and Tchitchy (and other
non-English speaking characters in *GR*) are often classic
Hollywood-dubbed spaghetti western stuff, aren't they; perhaps a
concession to the reader (you don't need quite as many foreign language
dictionaries and reference books to hand when you read *GR* as you do
when you read *TR*). Perhaps a deliberate ironic touch. Perhaps a
celebration of both the relationship depicted in the narrative *and* the
cinematic genre from which the cliches are borrowed ("Hi ho, Silver.
Away!--" 'Cept Tchitchy talks to his friend, not his horse.) Not
either/or, remember. Both/and.

"Got it." sez Tchitcherine. "Let's ride, comrade." (359.5)
