 "'Morphine, and caffeine, and cocaine, all in solution (...)'". (p. 345)

  Hard to imagine that the caffeine, sandwiched by the other two, would have any 
  effect. Maybe Pynchon did put it in because the history of its organic base, 
  talking about tea & coffee, contains - like in the other two cases - a strong 
  colonialistic element. A few passages later the text focusses on the opium 
  wars.
