After reading Joseph Heller's obit in today's Times, my wife was struck by
how "Catch-22" had become such a famous phrase, taking on a life of its own
outside the book and being used and misused by millions of people who never
read the book. She thought it was quite rare, I wasn't so sure and so we
stared at our book shelves for awhile. We came up with:
Big Brother
Scrooge
Can anyone think of other phrases from fiction [Laura says mythology and
the Bible don't count] that are part of our everyday lexicon?
