Morphine, "Dionine (345.7)," Caffeine, "Oneirine, Methoneirine (348.7)," and
_Tchitcherine_? This can't be an accident, but what's the message? It's
got something to do with all his being "a giant supermolecule with so many
open bonds available at any given time. (346.5)"
It's also got something to do with his role as "the Westwardman" his
faithful companion Whappo, AKA Chu Piang. Theirs is the relationship of a
superior and an inferior, but not exactly master and servant, more directly
like Batman and Robin, Tonto and the Lone Ranger. The homosexual overtones
are notoriously obvious. It is a union, a companionship.
In Tyrone's dream, and in the case of these two, it is a union of
degeneracy. Both parties have "open bonds" which gravitate them toward
"undesirables, sub rosa enemies of order, counterrevolutionary odds and ends
of humanity." By the structure of their relationship, they are products of
the "Order's" power-structure. By their inner natures they are the unwanted
counter-force to that same order. This is some form of synthesis in their
beings.
--------
(348.11) The [American] National Research Council has begun a massive
program to explore the morphine molecule [...] a Ten-Year Plan, coinciding
most oddly with the classic study of large molecules [Tchitcherine] being
carried on by DuPont, the Great Synthesist. Connection? Of course there's
one, but we don't talk about it.
--------
These two are frontiersmen, one conquered, one conquering. But both are
outsiders, enjoying their fringe existence, unsuitable for prime time, but
useful.
Is this Kirhiz land also the Zone? The Zone is a place where freedom
exists, for a time. As w/ the Gaucho's realm, it is without marks on its
pristine paper, a void which the Order cannot stand. The question inherent
in this line of inquiry asks about the relationship of the Rebel to the
Order. Tchitcherine worships rebellion, but he lives his own version within
Their realm. Is the only alternative to this arrangement his own death?
Maybe.
Only riffing,
David Morris
