Whiteout

I'll second Andrew Dinn's recommendation of _Whiteout:  The CIA, Drugs, and
the Press_ by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair:  painstaking,
gripping investigative journalism that uncovers how the U.S. government
(and, by extension, the business interests that influence the government),
through the CIA, has allied itself with gangsters and thugs around the
world. Pynchon readers won't be surprised at the world thus revealed; what
may shock is the degree to which his fiction -- especially GR -- found
roots in many of these same truths, long before they became common
knowledge, during an era when this sort of insight was, indeed, dangerous.
