You better watch out,
When the Hearse Goes By,
'Cause you may be
the next to die
They wrap you up
in a big white sheet
and then they bury you
six feet deep
>> The worms crawl in,
>> The worms crawl out,
>> The worms play pinochle on your snout.
the puss comes out
like whipping (dripping) cream
you put it on bread
and that's what you eat
when you are dead
The melody is abandoned soon after the pinochle game and becomes a chant.
This was usually followed by a rousing chorus of:
Give a cheer Give a cheer
for the nuns who drink the beer
in the cellar of St Joan of Arc (repeat)
for they drink, drink, drink,
til the pews go down the sink
etc.
