GR/Trainspotting

Greetings:
Am reading GR for the first time (having finished my first Pynchon COL49
a month or so ago) and am wondering if anyone has noticed the similarity
between the scene in which Slothrop dives for his harmonica (p. 72ff in
the Bantam mass market edition of 1974 or 75) and that in Trainspotting
in which Renton dives for his lost suppositories (p. 26, but handled
much more graphically in the movie)?
Thoughts, anyone?
Irvine Welsh's linguistic tricks are of a different sort entirely than
Pynchon's, but such an influence would still not surprise me.
