Perhaps Derek would explain a bit more this "problem with the intellectual
left that Pynchon seems to be problematizing" and where he finds this
treated in Pynchon's fiction.
Unless I badly misread Pynchon, it seems fair to say that he might be
fairly categorized as part of the "intellectual left". Clearly he's
intellectual, massively learned, and just as clearly in his writing he
embraces more than a few positions that might be categorized as"leftist".
I welcome all serious discussion, but may I also gently suggest that we
proceed without any more name-calling? We've had a nice long spell of
civility on the P-list, why spoil it now? I won't be the first to publicly
thank Terrance for bringing more than a few interesting insights to my
attention on Pynchon-L.
