Did the army of loving friends ever exist (David M asks)? Yes, but it
seems to have been only a stage, a step, a waypoint on the passage
through. Nothing is lasting. That was then, this is now. The picture 
is Karmic in the  sense of a reshuffling of existences. And the
state-change of record SEEMS clearly for the worse. Yet without Frenesi's
defection and her dark-night-of-the-soul degradation, the family which
produced Prairie would not have come into being. (though some would say
not much of a family)

Trying not to be a Gloomy Gus but avoiding Panglossianism at the same
time.
