I'll withhold judgement about whether Mike Davis is exaggerating or not
(seems difficult on the face of it to exaggerate on the subject of LA),
but one of his observations considered derisive seems rather ironic to an
old Angelino like myself. I'm thinking of the "fortress downtown
surrounded by a growing ring of dying suburbs," because the thing people
USED TO find fault with was that the place was a group of suburds IN
SEARCH OF A DOWNTOWN. But no matter. Mike's probably got it fairly right.
