Betrayal from above

Apologies for inflicting American party politics on an international
group such as the p-list (particularly anything as silly as what's going
on in our Congress at this moment) but we do have there a fairly good
example of the different roles the leadership and the rank and file play 
in politcal movements--a topic which came up here a few days ago.  In
Congress the leadership has to figure out some way to pull the bacon out
of the fire while  the true believer ranks are scared to death their
beloved cause is  going to be sold out for what they consider to be mere
expediency. (not a perfect example of course of what happened to the
People's Republic of Rock and Roll)
