NP Help with missing article?

I apologize in advance for plaguing you guys once again with my article
search problems, but I think I was originally pointed to this article by
someone on this list, so I'm hoping you can help.  I'm seeking an article
that was published online (NYT?  Salon?) either in late 1997 or early 1998
about a group of researchers who had taught a computer to write fiction.
Along with the article was a brief example of the computer's work, that had
a title something like "A Tale of Betrayal".  As I recall, the story was of
a Ph.D. candidate getting screwed by his dissertation director during his
defense.

I had copies of this article, both hard and soft, but in my cross-country
move and two reformattings of my hard drive, the file that it was in
apparently got hosed.  Any help would be hugely appreciated.
