>From the context it seems clear (to me) that this raid is an instantaneous, 
short-lived fantasy, though far be from me to say "unreal."  I like literal 
reading, but context asigns this to a momentary flight of fantasy, with the 
"real" time frame reappearing in the next paragraph.  This maze, though, is 
very real, and Slothrop is just entering its mouth.
