Not "insisting" that it's important and interesting to examine the A4
rocket as a lens through which to examine technology, politics,
spirituality, and so much else in the 20th century? Not "insisting" that
it's important and interesting to examine the drawing of the Mason and
Dixon line and the implications and ramifications of that act in M&D? Not
"insisting" that it's important and interesting to examine what's left of
the Movement '60s in the Reagan '80s in Vineland? And so on. By his very
choices of subject matter and his choices of ways to present this material,
Pynchon "insists" on many things. Encyclopedic he may be, but neiter all
inclusive nor lacking focus.
