high culture vs. low culture

How many instances of the merger between comic books and ww2 do we see in 
Gravity's Rainbow?  Of occult gatherings merging with the fate of people's 
lives?  It seems that Pynchon's ability to merge Rilke with american pop 
culture (for example) was representative of american culture as a whole 
during the sixties and seventies era.  What factors may have helped this 
merger of high and low cultural themes, both in GR but also in america at 
the time?
