I left out another key point of agreement with Andrew's post: TRP seems to
have tapped into this CIA drugs skullduggery before most of the
investigative work was done that has, in the years since GR was published,
aired the CIA's role in this business. Andrew McCoy's trailblazing _The
Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade_ (to name one
of the earlier exposes) didn't appear in print until 1972 (a revised and
edition appeared in 1991), probably too late to be a TRP source for GR.
And, as Charles Hollander's fine article on COL49 and the CIA in the latest
Pynchon Notes suggests, TRP seems to have been on the CIA's case long
before GR appeared.
