I had heard that Lovecraft termed the phrased "heavy metal thinder," of 
course appropriated by Steppenwolf in that song we all know and love and 
wish would go away. Of course, Pynchon is major heavy metal, the literary 
equilvalent of Starless & Bible Black-era KC.

By the way, Lovecraft has just been published in a bouncing new Penguin 
Classics edition, The Call of Cthulu and Other Weird Stories. Glad to see 
the cover is not so pulpish like the ballantine trade editions.
