The Chapman Stick has been around for a while - I would guess about
twenty years. Invented by Terry Chapman, I think. As I recall, it has
eleven strings starting below the range of a bass and possibly extending
higher than a guitar. It is not plucked; both hands play the fretboard
and the sound is produced by 'hammering on' the notes. (You may have
heard Stanley Jordan using this two-handed technique on the electric
guitar). Because you have more strings - so more possibilities for
simultaneous notes - and both hands fretting, you can get much denser,
pianistic sounds from a Stick.
A bass-playing friend of mine just got one; maybe I'll pay him a visit
soon. I played one long ago (when I worked in a music store) and decided
I play enough instruments without learning this beast .
