One more thought about LSD in the hands of the cartel criminals and the CIA
-- it ties into the larger theme of Control in GR. By synthesizing the
chemical, They seek to be able to control it, to bend it to their will.
But, LSD slips out of Sandoz's grasp. They do manage to use it for harm in
the Cold War (MK-ULTRA), but They can't stop LSD from fueling a full-scale
cultural revolution in the '60s that They just barely manage to get back
under "control" in the 1970s and '80s. But have They really got it under
control? Hasn't that psychedelic culture -- in its life-affirming modes --
continued to bubble along beneath the surface all along? People are still
doing LSD and other psychedelics -- still investigating its uses in
psychotherapy and sacred settings, too; see Council on Spiritual Practices
-- and, unfortunately, still getting sucked back into the dark dream by
all the distractions that Mucho mentions in that passage from Vineland I
quoted in my previous post. They can't control it, no more than They can
control the various systems and technologies They set into motion in GR.
Those technologies can come back and destroy them, like Frankenstein's
monster.
Because this is real life and not GR, where the bomb is falling on the
final page, these technologies (LSD included) can also pass into the hands
of people who can use them for good, life-affirming purposes -- that
project hasn't entirely succeeded yet, of course, but it hasn't failed
altogether, either. Control is an illusion, remember? And the Counterforce
is always with us. Until we blow everything up, at least.
