< What did Andree find in the polar silence? >
Canadian Arctic explorer Vhjalmar Stephansson casts light on the mystery of
Andree's death with a description of the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning
in the close environment of a small tent with cooking stove for heat.... It
seems when the 1895 Andree expedition's remains were finally found in 1930,
the cooking stove was found with it's valve open. The tent was located
beneath the overhang of a cliff, shelter against the wind, but a bad place
for ventilation when the snowdrift built up. Stephansson cites his own near
disaster with several others in an igloo involving c2o poisoning as well. He
goes on to mention Byrd's unfortunate experience in the Antarctic also
involving poor ventilation.
Is technology the ultimate trap?
