If anyone wants a massive injection of Pynchonian paranoia, s/he can
head to Germany.  I spent three months in Regensburg, the ancestral home
of the Thurn und Taxis bunch, and I never got used to their name and
insignia being plastered everywhere--on museums, breweries, restaurants,
and, of course, mail boxes.  Deutsche Post is now a privately-held
corporation, so far as I know, but it's directly descended from the old
T&T  family, and its unmuted horn logo is impossible to miss.  Heck,
these days Deutsche Post even sponsors team handball.  Talk about the
routinization of charisma . . . .
