POUNDS 53M WAR EPIC TO BE SHOT IN BERLIN
THE most expensive film to be made in Europe begins filming in Berlin
next year.
Enemy at the Gates has a pounds 53million budget and stars Ed Harris, of
Apollo 13 fame, Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes. It is the story of the
doomed German attack on Stalingrad, Russia, in the Second World War.
Filming of the battle using thousands of extras will take place at the
Potsdam-Babelsberg studios in the re-adopted German capital in January
An abandoned cement factory is to be blown up to serve as the rubble in
which a million men struggled for supremacy during the real battle.
Director Frenchman Jean-Jacques Arnaud said: "I want to make this so
realistic that you will think you were there."
Defeat at Stalingrad, now renamed Volgagrad, in 1942 was a turning point
in the war against Hitler.
The vanquished Germans lost 250,000 men and had a further 112,000
soldiers captured.
Only 6,000 of those ever made it back to Germany.
