Try Angela Carter. There's a wide range of influences in her work that range
from Dickens through to Borges, and she shares Pynchon's disregard for
high/low culture distinctions. Her writing's very sharp and funny as well.
Start with "Nights at the Circus", which is probably her most accessable
book, or "Love" which is representative of her earlier work.
Jayne Anne Phillips is pretty impressive as well - nudging around magic
realist/Faulkner territory, but there's something intense and unique about
her writing. "Machine Dreams" is as good a start as any.
