When are we according to Weisenburger? Fowler? Don't have
them handy? If they give a date, how do the account for it?
In this chapter we wake up with Slothrop and when the hell
are we? Well, the boys from the war are there and Kaje
right? Slothrop has a shirt from brother Hogan--so "TSI" and
this story don't jive in terms of dates. Well it's not
unlike Pynchon to move people around and change them as he
sees fit. However, sometimes he moves them around and the
dates fit if we don't hold fast to the historical dates,
which as we have seen don't add up, if Pynchon can
count--April fools. The first we know of Slothrop is his
desk. Parts, junk, pieces, affects, hints and echoes to
spread the myth of the central metaphor--like darlene and
the cough drops for the candy drill dream or George Formby
the slapstick comic of the North West--"all resonance and
dark fun:....possessed of a single comic shtick" (Pynchon)
and of coarse something from MOM. Pynchon's favorite way to
create a mediating character, first parts and next he needs
to mythologize him as he describes King or Captain Lud.
Girls, man that's the way to make a myth --are the girls
for real--doesn't matter to us, erections and rockets and
science messing with something and something unforeseen
happens. So Slothrop with his comic garb and the girls love
it. Fighting an evil octopus, clothes stolen, up a tree
that's been weakened for his fall. He smells the Berkshires
and Cape Cod and were on vacation from the blitz. Are we
still in the war years or 60s or later? One things for sure,
at a certain level, as Slothrop re-enters sleep, he's a
rocketman--something from Dad. Had to pay for that Harvard
Education you know.
