Borges, and Eco, mainly. I thought "Foucault's Pendulum" took "The Name of the
Rose" , and simply played to some of the various parts. I was going to
originally suggest "The Quincunx" (I know, I know, guilty pleasures...), until I
checked the publication dates, only to discover both published in English in
'89.
So, I was mainly thinking of Eco as derivative of Eco, but it struck me that
writers have long written about books, so Eco may simply be carrying on a
time-honored tradition.

...who, by the by, enjoyed Kotler's book...a nice debut...not as striking a
debut as "A Case of Curiosities" or "Lempriere's Dictionary" or "Three Farmers
on Their Way..." but still, interesting if you like that kind of stuff...think
Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" cut way down in size, and not about cryptography
but about the Kabbalah...
