Wait a minute!  The CRAB is Medusa's head!  OK, now how does it go?  The 
monster turns to stone?  Yes, the Soviet sub!  Of course!  Now it makes sense 
to me.  Having fun here.  An allusion merely.  Yes, Katje is the Freudian 
mother-figure.  The fact that she's wearing black refers to her status as a 
shadow, not what she seems, without substance of her own.  Slothrop makes her 
Venus-mother.
