GRGR: Todorov and Clendinnen on the Holocaust

I haven't read the Todorov book in question, but I'd caution against
drawing any conclusions about it based on a daily newspaper review (if I
read Derek's posts correctly, he's aiming his critique more at the way the
reviewer is framing the issues; forgive me if I'm off base here).  I did
have the pleasure of studying with Todorov, and getting to know him
socially, as a UC Berkeley undergraduate many years ago, and I'd be quite
surprised to learn that he has written about the Holocaust in a way that
wouldn't engage moral sensibilities and at least try to get to the core of
the issues involved in what it means to confront the evil of this Holocaust.
