I really haven't nailed it down, but consider the following:
1. De-conditioning involves reversal of learning, sort of. It's really just
more conditioning. So regression would be just more training by Them. To
what end? THAT's a good question! What IS/WAS Pointy's plan for Slothrop?
2. Slothrop's "mechanism," if it exists, was instilled in his infancy. They
may be trying to explore his consciousness in terms of his original
conditioning experience. Are they in a sense dissecting him?
