One of the ghosts that flutters through GR is the subject of a new book,
_The Contender_ by Irwin F. Gellman reviewed in the NY Times today at
http://www.nytimes.com/books/99/08/29/daily/090199gellman-book-review.html

Reviewer Richard Bernstein writes:
"Nixonphobia turned into a cult, and its visceral hatred cannot be
overemphasized," Gellman writes near the end of his narrative of the early
Nixon career. "Every major charge brought against him during his
congressional years" is "not sustained by facts." In reality, Gellman
concludes, Nixon was a "hard-working, promising young star" of Republican
politics who played to win; and he did win, not by engineering dirty tricks
but, in Gellman's view, by outthinking his opponents and better measuring
the drift of post-World War II American life than they did."

Not a view that Pynchon's politics would support, I don't think.

"What?
