First, it is with great sadness that I report that Beau Jacques is dead of a
heart attack at age 45. The 6'6" Afro-Cajun musician is gone all too soon.
Yes, he played in some of the "seedier" New Orleans joints about which the
listers have spoken in recent days, but he also played on the second floor of
a bowling alley and drew big enough crowds that the owner was planning to
reinforce the upper room to accommodate them. You must hear him, so go to
Rounder Records and get a CD, preferably his 1993 debut album. It got this
"Day the Music Died" 60's boy up and rocking. Of course, Duane Allman's
guitar on "Statesboro Blues" and "One Way Out" also does that trick. The
point is, if you say you know New Orleans music, but you don't know Louisiana
music from outside The Big Easy, you don't know New Orleans music. Trust
me-not only am I an attorney, I was born and reared in the City That Care
Forgot. I had two groups play at my high school prom who were so well known
by us that we probably took them for granted-Irma Thomas and The Neville
Brothers (you know, Art and Aaron) with a guest appearance by Ernie "Mother
in Law" K-Doe. Now, before I get to Governor Jimmie "You Are My Sunshine"
Davis, who just had his 100th birthday this weekend and The Louisiana Hayride
(precursor to The Grand Ole Opry)...
You folks read a lot of novels. Makes me a little jealous, until I think
about teal hunting in the rice fields of Southwest Louisiana this weekend....
But, I digress. Buy the Beau's album-now!
