excerpt:
"Not all authors have been eager to be questioned. Naturally, both J.D.
Salinger and Thomas Pynchon, the mystery men of American letters, refused.
Salinger replied with a note striking a Bartleby-like stance of "I prefer
not to." Eventually The Review ran a piece about a journalist's aborted
attempt to talk to Salinger.

"Plimpton has always hoped that Pynchon would relent, banking on the
author's goodwill because Plimpton reviewed his novel "V" favorably in The
New York Times Book Review. Also eluding The Paris Review are Harper Lee
and Anne Tyler, among others."
