"Faith" is a very nebulous word.  There are many wells of the soul from 
which faith rises, some noble, some not.  In GR Pynchon probes the subject 
of faith in the character of Franz Pokler, who choses faith as a remedy to 
his weakness and guilt which is fully laid bare much further on (421.10).
