I think "Salt of the Earth" was always meant to be tongue-in-cheek.  Jagger 
revels in the fact that he's not "one of them."

As for "Performance," I must have seen that one about 20 times.  I own a 
video copy myself now.  It's a film that requires multiple viewings to keep 
up with all its allusionary quick cuts.  And the video of "Memo to Turner" 
is great!
