Sofia Kovalevski was set to marry (in a fictitious wedding so as to allow SK 
to study abroad in Zurich) Ivan Grigorervich Rozhdestvenskii, an upright, 
progressive young man whose only drawbacks were extreme ugliness and a 
slight overfondness for beer, in  the mid-1860s. SK's father rejected Ivan 
as a suitable husband.  SK eventually arranged to be married to Vladimir 
Kovalevski a few years later.
