Hi all--
reading a second bio of Sophia Kovalewski, called Little Sparrow written by
Don Kennedy (a former California newspaperman and aerospace design
engineer).
On the whole, a much better work than A Convergence of Lies, partly due to
the fact that Kennedy delves more into Sonya's bloodlines (her father's side
(his initials V.V.) of the family descended from Hungarian royality,
possibly with some gypsy blood mixed in; her mother's side German, where she
purportedly inherited from the Shuberts their inclination for abstract
thought) and by reprinting much more from Sonya's letters, journals,
autobiography, and novel excerpts--her recounting of the day the serfs were
"set free" is quite good. There's also beautiful descriptions of her in the
estate's tower that was attached to their country house at Palibino in
Belarussia, listening to the baying of wolves and worried about werewolves,
a family outing in the lush forests, peasant and landlord freely mixing,
drinking, sharing stories, watching the birds returning in springtime.

Anyway, good stuff and quite a remarkable woman.

more nonsense to come.

Rich
