The double agents pass the time playing "games in which pain is the
overt commodity".

This statement implies that in all the other games, pain is the covert,
unacknowledged commodity -- what you cash in your chips for.

When I was a lad, my friends and I played a game in which one person
would punch the other person's shoulder over and over, a little harder
each time until the punchee couldn't stand it. Is this the game TP
refers to as "Charley-Charley"?
