This has probably come up on Pynchon-L before, but a friend of mine
said something to me today that makes me wonder if the U-boat full of
Argentinian anarchists headed towards the Zone might be, among other
things, Pynchon's comment on the ratline that carried Nazis from
Germany to safety in Argentina and other South American countries.
  >>
At spring 1945 (!), a few weeks before unconditional surrender, a German
U-boat appeared in the harbour of Buenos Aires; but not with unfriendly
intentions; the Argentine authorities said "Welcome" to the German crew, and
several boxes were carried from the U-boat into several bank-safes; then the
U-boat disappeared. Evita Peron, in the years before her early cancer death,
travelled several times to Switzerland and France in the late forties and
early fifties; she spoke with politicians and Suisse bank managers. Later her
brother did the same, and was murdered later in Argentina; his murderer was
never captured. In 95 oder 96, a bomb exploded in front of the Jewish Center
in Buenos Aires; 90 people were killed. Some weeks before, an parlamentarian
investigation comitee was constituted in Buenos Aires which had to
investigate the Peron-Zürich-Vaticane-Nazi-connection. Some mysterious things
happened there the most of it unknown until today.
